Our Mission:
Buckfastleigh.Net is working with a number of suppliers to provide
a mixed technology broadband network, both wired and wireless, for the
community of Buckfastleigh in Devon, United Kingdom.
This is a newly-launched pilot programme supported by the Department of
Trade & Industry and the South West Regional Development Agency to bring
high-speed, always-on Internet connection to key facilities in the town
and to the community as a whole.
This pilot will establish a model which can be taken up by other
communities.
The Schedule:
| Phase 1
Designing and implementing a broadband network for the community of
Buckfastleigh, which connects the Library, Primary School, Town Hall
and a Public Access Centre in the town centre.
| Phase 2
Opening the Public Access Centre as an easily accessible, friendly
welcome into the world of broadband. The Centre will be a showcase for
the exciting uses of broadband. Offering help and advice on the benefits
of broadband to the people, community organisations and businesses of
Buckfastleigh. Attracting new business and employment opportunities.
Extending the reach of the network further out into the community through
the connection of a number of key buildings.
| Phase 3
Working with commercial partners to make a broadband service available
to the whole community.
2 Years on:
1st Broadband, a commercial wireless Internet Service
Provider (now ceased) have enabled Buckfastleigh and are working on the
surrounding areas. Initial coverage and service appears to be good and
we're hoping it will grow to cover the entire area.
